The design of the game itself is fairly standard for the open world genre, you have an enormous map to drive around and explore. All this creates an intriguing and strong narrative as you slowly piece together how both Clay’s actions between missions and player-controlled actions lead to the final conclusion. There are also interspersed clips of congressional hearings that look into the actions that Clay and his allies took over the course of the game. In between missions, and after the completion of certain goals, the game jumps ahead to the near-present for interviews with surviving characters. It follows an almost Pulp Fiction-style structure in that many events are told through non-linear flashbacks. Lincoln’s own attitude is probably emblematic of the time – he tends to ignore and shrug off the casual racism as this is a part of his life and always has been.īesides the authenticity, the narrative structure is an interesting counterpoint to the game itself. and John F Kennedy, all lending to the atmosphere and authenticity. In addition to the language and racist attitudes, news reports on the radio are peppered with news on the assassination of Dr. This is not like GTA V in which black characters use it as it is often used in black American culture the word drips with discrimination whenever it is used in Mafia III. Be warned, this dedication to authenticity extends to language used to hear NPCs use the n-word in the context of prejudice is jarring. I didn’t understand it until I saw a second message pop up to inform me that many businesses are segregated and that if I linger in the diner, the cops will be called to arrest me for loitering. I was struck the first time I walked into a diner and a warning that I was trespassing popped up. When Lincoln walks past a white, female NPC, she automatically clutches her bag and shies away. The game takes great care to structure the narrative around the systemic racism and attitudes of the time. This game starts with a note from the developers in which they state that they felt that to censor the language or the attitudes towards black men and women in that time period and location would be a disservice to the people who actually lived through that shameful period.

What is a standout in this game is the recreation of late 1960s southern United States, and I am not talking about the cars and music. To say any more would spoil the rest of the game.

After a life-changing heist, Sal betrays Sammy, leaving Lincoln the only survivor of a massacre and setting up the meat of the game: Lincoln’s mission to destroy Sal and everything he loves. They run the criminal enterprises of The Hollow (a region in New Bordeaux) for the Italian Mob’s Sal Marcone. The game quickly introduces you to his extended, adopted family of step-brother Ellis and surrogate-father Sammy. He is a battle-hardened soldier, ready to leave behind the pain, violence, and morally grey areas that he operated under during his time in Vietnam. Lincoln Cole is a newly-returned Vietnam veteran, stopping over in New Bordeaux on his way to a new life as a dock worker on the US West Coast. With Mafia III, however, the rise of an Italian mobster set in the vaguely disguised traditional mob cities of the US East Coast is abandoned for the New Orleans analogue “New Bordeaux”, and the decidedly un-Italian Lincoln Cole who is out for revenge. A franchise that was a, shall we say, homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Godfather duology ( Godfather III does not count). Publisher 2K put their considerable resources behind the Mafia series.

Mafia 3 non lethal series#
Since the mainstream introduction of the open world crime genre with GTA III – and considering the monster hits that GTA IV and GTA V became – developers have clamoured to grab their slice of the pie with games as diverse as the Saints Row series and Assassin’s Creed.
